News and reviews of Adit's Environmental software packages and services

Adit Limited publishes packaged software targeted at the needs of everyone studying individual species and their interrelationships or taking responsibility for the conservation or rehabilitation of the environment. Adit software is relevant to individuals working in this field and to organisations, commercial businesses and statutory authorities.

Adit limited also undertakes projects to integrate existing paper and computer based systems with new methods and processes ensuring that information is updated and relevant to your current needs.

Our recording software, AditSite, has been in use since 1992. This, the original Windows based recording package, was followed by the innovative AditMap designed to meet the needs of individuals creating maps without the aid of cartographers or expensive geographic data resources.

In response to the clear market need, Adit Limited developed AditPlan a tool designed to help individuals and organisations undertake effective site and species management.

AditMap can be used as a standalone product for mapping and data plotting but also fully supports AditSite by extending the mapping capabilities to meet the the most demanding requirements. AditPlan integrates both AditSite and AditMap with a whole host of planning features to provide the most effective software package addressing environmental management needs available today.

AditSite News

AditSite continues to be refined in response to user feedback as well as to new opportunities identified by the Adit team.

AditTrec

Don't tell anyone, but you can now get hold of a program that runs on Palm OS® handheld computers, that can be fully integrated with AditSite. More information on AditTrec

GPS and Galileo

Two of the most important areas of innovation have been the support for the use of GPS (Global Positioning System) devices to aid recording and mapping and the major effort to ensure that AditSite users can load data from just about any source and that they can pool and contribute their data to national and international organisations.

With the end of selective availability, a relatively inexpensive GPS unit (about £100) can be a most effective aid to recording.  Species are recorded as waypoints while out in the field and can then be uploaded directly to AditSite back at base.

Take a look at Paul Griffiths' short piece on how the GPS link was achieved and how it can be applied to everyday wildlife recording tasks.

In May of 2003 the European Space Agency (ESA) said in a statement that an agreement had been reached among its member states which finalised the conditions for the launch of the Galileo system of 30 satellites that will rival the USA's GPS service. The new system will come into operation in 2008 - it is not often that you can predict an AditSite upgrade that far ahead.

Data Integration

AditSite supports the import of data from many external databases and spreadsheets.  If you have data bound up in an old file format or database then contact us for advice on how to use AditSite to incorporate all of your data into a single database.

AditSite now has automated features to help groups and organisations collect, collate and centralise data collected in the field. AditSite is fully scaleable allowing large numbers of interactive users to share a single master database.

Species Illustrations

AditSite now has an instant Internet picture search facility. You can now harness the combined power of Google, the Internet and AditSite to quickly locate and retrieve pictures of the species your are studying and recording. Whether you are just looking for pictures to enhance your recording activities or if you are looking for material suitable for publication* then this new and exclusive AditSite facility is just what you need.

AditMap News

As mapping and plotting biological wildlife and environmental data becomes an increasingly important part of analysis AditMap continues to provide enhance facilities to help you create the maps you need. AditMap continues to support evolving standards for digital map data such as the new Ordnance Survey GML standard but also helps you build maps from simple resources such as scanned images.

Much of the most recent work on AditMap has been to enhance the capability of AditMap to turn your scanned sketch maps and photographs into re-scalable flexible drawing objects. Our raster to vector conversion tools continue to get the best out of your images. Take a look at Paul Griffiths's short piece on the problems and challenges overcome to establish this new AditMap facility.

Another new feature of AditMap is that it has now opened up an API (Application Programming Interface) to allow external programs to take advantage of AditMap's data plotting and display facilities. If you program in languages such as Visual Basic or even in VBA within Access, Excel or Word then you can use this new AditMap facility.
