Project aims and objectives
- The Postcode Plants Database was originally developed by the Adit team in conjunction with Flora-for-Fauna of the Natural History Museum
- Simply by typing in the first three or four characters of their postcodes, householders, schools, garden centres and councils would obtain tailor-made lists of local plants
- This would enable users to decide which plants they should grow in their garden
- In addition, users would be able to identify which plants are hospitable to wildlife
TopSoftware Development
- Data came from two sources:
- Existing data from the Natural History Museum which is referenced by 10km squares
- The postcode centroid table, sourced from the Royal Mail
- The Adit team cross-referenced these two data sources, and designed a user-friendly interface to allow easy searching for 'garden-worthiness' for any post code entered
- In addition, information screens were created for users to find out about encouraging insects in their garden, according to the plants selected
