TopHow to use AditWeb
First install Google Gears
In order to run AditWeb for the first time, you will first need to install Google Gears, a browser extension for web applications. This is very quick and simple.
Saving records
- Choose what you would like to record - Birds, Mammals or Butterflies - and click the link
- On the form, you can enter:
- Recorder's name
- Species from the drop-down list
- Location name
- Position in Lat/Long
- Count
- Date
- Notes
- If you need to convert your grid reference to Lat/Long use the Nearby website link to convert it
- Click [Save This Record] to update the records in the database
Display records onscreen
- Click [Select Records] to see a simple list of all your records
Install AditWeb
- AditWeb does not have to be used online, for ease of use, install AditWeb and use it direct from your desktop
- Additionally, in order to display records on Google Earth (but not Live Earth), you will need to have installed AditWeb:
- In Internet Explorer, go to [File], then [Save As] and save AditWeb to your desktop (or elsewhere, if you prefer) as a Webpage Complete or Web Archive file
- If you are using Firefox, go to [File], then [Save Page As] and save AditWeb to your desktop (or elsewhere, if you prefer) as a Webpage Complete file
- To use AditWeb offline in future, double-click on the desktop icon whenever you want to use the form
Plot records on Google Earth
- Select [Display records using Google Earth]
- You will be prompted to install Google Earth, if you have not previously used the program (just follow the instructions)
- Once Google Earth is installed, you will be taken to a new screen, where you click on [Plot]
- Google Earth will start to open but if it is delayed you may find that a warning has come up:
- [An ActiveX control on this page might be unsafe to interact with other parts of the page. Do you want to allow this interaction?]
- Click [Yes]
- Your records will now be displayed on Google Earth as pins
Plot records on Live Earth
- Select [Display records using Live Earth]
- Your records will now be displayed on Live Earth as pins

Can I use this system when I am not online?
Yes, just save a copy of the recording form, AditWeb, to your computer:
- In Internet Explorer, go to [File], then [Save As] and save AditWeb to your desktop (or elsewhere, if you prefer) as a Webpage Complete or Web Archive file
- In Firefox, go to [File], then [Save Page As] and save AditWeb to your desktop (or elsewhere, if you prefer) as a Webpage Complete file

How is my data stored?
- The data is saved using Google Gears
- Google Gears uses Sql Lite for data storage
- Google describes their web application as follows: 'Google Gears (BETA) is an open source browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality using a number of JavaScript APIs'
