Workshop - Using a Pocket PC to identify and record wildlife
- Adit was invited by Steve McWilliam of rECOrd to present a workshop to a small number of delegates at The Recorders Conference 2007, on the use of handheld computers in the identification and recording of species in the field
- The 'small' workshop attracted considerable interest, and most people got a chance to see what can be done on a Pocket PC with built-in GPS and an idea of how the Adit handheld software integrates with desktop systems
- There were some useful suggestions for additional features in AditTrec. Many thanks to those who contributed ideas
TopMarch 2007 - WildMap at The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Building Interactive Maps for Handheld Devices
- Adit has been working closely with the WildKey team on a new product - WildMap
- The concept is fairly simple and allows users to be guided around visitor attractions using a GPS enabled Pocket PC
- For such a simple concept, there have been enough technical issues to keep it interesting!
- The product had its first public outing at The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall
WildMap
- The Adit team starts by building a map of the site using AditMap and data from Ordnance Survey
- The base map layer is overlayed with polygons to give a more attractive look and feel
- Geo-referenced points of interest (which can include text, sounds, individual images and slide shows) are added to the map using a desktop module
- The whole data set is then downloaded to a number of handheld devices
- As the user walks around the grounds, the handheld shows them where they are, and what points of interest are nearby
